Who is Fang Bin?
Fang Bin is a businessman in Wuhan. He shared a video about the corona virus outbreak called Covid-19 to “report the actual situation here”, and promised to “do the best” in reporting.
He uploaded his first video on January 25, 2020 then to the YouTube channel, which is banned in China but can be accessed through a virtual private network (VPN). Bandar Judi Ceme Online
The first few videos that were shared were about Fang’s activities traveling around the city and showing the situation in various different places. The videos were watched approximately 1,000 times.
Then on February 1, Fang recorded an event that caught people’s attention and was watched more than 200 thousand times.
Fang showed eight bodies piled up in a minibus outside a hospital in Wuhan.
After the video went viral, Fang accused the police of breaking into his home the same night, and interrogated the video.
He was taken away, given a warning and finally released by the police.
Fang does not stop. Then on February 9, he again shared a 13-second video with the words “everyone revolts – giving up government power back to the people”.
After the video, social media accounts became quiet.
What is known about Chen Qiushi?
Chen is a former human rights lawyer who later became a video journalist. He is quite well known among activists.
Chen’s reputation was fostered and known since he reported the protests in Hong Kong last August.
When he returned to mainland China, Chinese authorities harassed and suppressed his social accounts and the results of their coverage.
Do not stop there, Chen’s social media accounts in China are reported to have 700 thousand followers deleted.
The treatment of the Chinese Government was unable to silence Chen.
In October, he created a YouTube account that now has 400 thousand followers. He also has more than 265 followers on Twitter.
In late January, Chen decided to enter Wuhan to report the worsening situation there. 2 Journalists Spread Wuhan Condition Disappeared
I will use my camera to document what really happened. I promise I will not … cover up the truth, Chen said in his first YouTube video.
After arriving in Wuhan, Chen visited various hospitals in Wuhan, saw his condition and talked with patients.
Chen realized that the action was endangering him. He told the BBC’s John Sudworth earlier this month that he was not sure how long it could continue.
The censorship is very tight and people’s accounts are closed if they share my content, he said.
Then, on the 7th of February, a video was shared on Chen’s Twitter account – which is currently managed by his friend.
The video shows Chen’s mother telling him that Chen had disappeared the day before.
Through a YouTube video, Chen’s friend Xu Xiaodong later alleged that Chen had been forcibly quarantined.
What did the Chinese authorities say?
Chinese authorities remain silent about the disappearance of the two citizen journalists.
Until this news was released, there had been no official statement from the authorities about where Fang Bin and Chen Qiushi were, or since when and where they were if they were quarantined.
Amnesty International researcher Patrick Poon said it was still unclear whether Chen or Fang were “taken away by the police or placed under ‘forced quarantine'”.
Poon called on authorities to “at least” contact family members to communicate Chen and Fang’s whereabouts.
The Chinese authorities must notify their families and give them access to vote and get a lawyer. If that does not happen then it is evidence that they risk being tortured or mistreated, Poon said
Why did they disappear?
Beijing is known to often press vocal activists to criticize the corona case, with the aim of showing that the corona outbreak can be controlled.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW) researchers, Chinese authorities are currently “more focused on silencing criticism because it contains the spread of the virus”.
Earlier, a doctor in Wuhan, named Li Wenliang, was warned not to spread “false comments” after increasing concern about the virus earlier in December.
Until finally, Li contracted the corona virus and died.
Mr. Li’s death caused a wave of anger and rebellion on social media. The Chinese authorities were stunned, and reacted by trying to censor any critical comments about Dr. death. Li
The authorities themselves carried out a detrimental action by [allegedly] missing Fang and Chen, he added.
On the Chinese news site, Weibo, a number of comments appear that mention Chen and Fang – and it seems that the posts will soon be removed by Chinese censors who are always on guard.
[They] rewrote history, one commented. Slowly it will be like [there never was] someone named Chen Qiushi.
